Tribute

I am sorry that I could not write sooner, my heart was too full!
My friendship with Miss Bennett extended over 66 years. In 1949 she
came to St Stephen's Girls College in Hong Kong. It was only a few years
after the 2nd World War. We had very few young teachers then , and
most elderly teachers were reserved and kept to the old method of
teaching. Her presence was like the thunder of springtime(春雷) bringing
vivacity, youthfulness and warmth to the school. Her enthusiasm and
heartiness were infectious. Those were two wonderful years when we were
blessed with her as our dear teacher, form-mistress and friend. Alas,
too too short!
I met her again in 1973 when I returned to Hong Kong with my baby
son Owen after a lapse of 22 years. My parents had passed away, I was
lonely and disappointed in life. She took me and Owen under her care at
once with so much love and warmth. I was baptized with Owen the same
day in 1976, and she was Owen's godmother. Miss Tai Yu Chor, her great
friend and my kindergarten teacher Miss Or Pui Cheung , both teachers of
St. Stephen's were also our guarantors. With faith of the Lord, support and encouragements from Miss Bennett and friends I determined to build a new
life for myself and Owen from the scratch! Miss Bennett's home at
St. Catharine's was like a sanctuary for me and Owen. Since then she had
become family to us.
We cherished her frequent visits to Hong Kong with Mary and her regular
newsletters after her retirement. In the 90's I was fortunate to be able to visit
and stay at their beautiful home in High Wycombe with Owen several times. Especially the wonderful and unforgettable cruise on the Danube taken
together the four of us in 2006! How blessed Owen and I were able to see
Miss Bennett the last time in June last year, and spent two wonderful days with her
and Mary together! Alas, only too too short!
These beautiful and precious memories I will keep and cherish forever in
my heart until one day when I will be reunited with Miss Bennett and all my
dear ones in our Eternal Home. I could anticipate our joy then!

All these years I have also witnessed the devotions and love of Mary
for her mother. She has sacrificed willingly a great deal for her. I never k
new any other daughter who could have done so much for her parent.
And I never knew any elderly person who could enjoy such sumptuous
and colorful life as Miss Bennett. I am also very thankful that Mary let us
accompany the last journey of Miss Bennett and share their tremendous
love and devotions to each other. Owen also found it a valuable education
of life. These meant very much to both of us.

Rest in peace Miss Bennett, my dearest mentor , teacher and friend! Catherine FeeFung Fung

P.S.- By Mary Bennett: I shared some of our ups and downs with a groups of friends via online communications . I knew there were , still are so many friends would love to know how we were. I know that we had given support to each other during those very precious 2 months.
